In honor of construction resuming on the I-70 West Vail Project in Vail, Colorado, here’s a look back at some project photos from last fall. During the winter months of this project, road work temporarily stops because of unpredictable weather and road conditions and resumes in the spring. We’re currently working to improve safety and traffic flow along eastbound and westbound I-70 at West Vail Pass with curve modifications, wildlife crossings and a new auxiliary lane. Work also includes the reconstruction of two aging bridges and relocating a two-mile section of the Vail Pass Recreation Trail. From April – November 2024, our focus will be on the eastbound bridge reconstruction near Mile Point 185. Construction will continue through 2026. We’re looking forward to completing another major season of the project and appreciate everyone’s patience during construction.

An exciting project award to share - The Hubbard Center for Children at Children's Nebraska in Omaha has been recognized with a 2024 Marvin M. Black Award by the Associated General Contractors of America. This prestigious award is presented each year to one construction project that stands out by achieving common goals, resolving conflict, incorporating team-building activities and improving communication on the project. The Hubbard Center was one of the first projects in Nebraska built with an integrated project delivery method. Real-time estimating helped the client save $50 million on the overall cost of construction. Kiewit was the construction manager on the project. The 427,000-square-foot hospital expansion features an emergency department, surgery, newborn intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, radiology department and pharmacy. Pictured below accepting the award is Alvin Kobes, VP of Construction and Real Estate at Children’s Nebraska, Kiewit Project Manager Alan Brodin and Kiewit Project Director John Sibley.

Across North America, Kiewit is proud to partner with our clients to deliver the energy and infrastructure projects our communities need to be more resilient and sustainable. From utility-scale solar, to carbon capture solutions, water and wastewater facilities, beach restoration, new and refurbished light rail transit, and more, the importance of the work we design and build is not lost on us. Our environmental management program, focused efforts to reduce the carbon impact of our equipment fleet and improve the efficiency of our fixed facilities, as well as volunteer initiatives to beautify our communities, all further shape our impact on the places where we live and work. #EarthDay

Over the last decade, Devon Stephenson has played an integral role in many different parts of our organization. After graduating from Dalhousie University, Devon started as a field engineer with our team in Western Canada on a major oil sands project in Northern Alberta. Since then, he has supported other projects for Western Canada, worked at Kiewit University in Omaha, Nebraska, as a technical manager and relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona to work with InEight, a subsidiary of Kiewit. Where is Devon now? He is currently with Kiewit Development in Toronto, which supports the development of Kiewit’s project finances, alternative and P3 projects from origination, through procurement, construction, operations and maintenance, all the way through to final handback. Devon is also the operations manager for the Tłı̨chǫ All-Season Road Project in Canada’s Northwest Territories. While the construction of this project is complete, Kiewit is responsible for its operations and maintenance for the duration of the project’s term. Devon travels to the project every month meeting with Indigenous employees who support operations and maintenance efforts. This spring, Devon and the team will focus on any erosion or sediment control concerns, drainage, ditch maintenance and continuous inspection of the road and the four bridge structures. The last several years have been a great experience for Devon – not only working on a global award-winning project but also working closely with the locals and building lasting relationships with the crew and the client. Devon’s favorite part about Kiewit? “No two days are alike. There are new challenges every day and overcoming them with the team is very rewarding and fulfilling." Thanks for sharing your journey, Devon!

In just 28 weeks, our Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, office underwent a major transformation. Check out the beautiful new space! As you can see, the open-concept areas are great for collaboration and feature many amenities for our employees and visitors, including entertainment areas, common spaces with coffee bars, large conference rooms and state-of-the-art technology throughout. The 54,000-square-foot building is home to Kiewit employees who work in the Eastern United States and within our power delivery and infrastructure engineers group, along with employees from Kiewit subsidiaries, Jett Industries, Inc. and Mass Electric Co. (MEC). Thanks to everyone who helped us complete the office renovations so quickly.
